Maria Teresa Toral was a Spanish scientist who became a revolutionary during the Spanish Civil War and was exiled to Mexico after receiving the death penalty by the Franco government. Once in Mexico, she established a style of popular printmaking.

In 1956 she went into exile in Mexico, where she taught Chemistry and Biochemistry at the National Autonomous University of Mexico and the National Polytechnic Institute. She also worked as a translator of scientific texts.
In 1960 she began training in the technique of engraving. Her chemical knowledge favoured her choice of engraving as her means of artistic expression.
Some of her series of engravings are inspired by the poetry of authors such as León Felipe, Miguel Hernández, Antonio Machado, Federico García Lorca and Pablo Neruda.
