In the 1670s, a type of glass was invented at the Müller glass factory in Šumava, which was later called Czech crystal. It was a perfectly clear potassium-lime glass, ideal for engraving and grinding. In addition to ornamental or figured engravings, crystal glass was often decorated with paintings. At that time, this type of glass was unrivalled. Therefore, its fame quickly spread beyond the Czech borders, partly thanks to active merchants.
By the early 18th century, Czech glass was so popular that it began to put pressure on the previously seemingly untouchable Venetian glass producers. In response, the Venetians began creating products that attempted to imitate Czech glass. Czech glass reached its peak popularity between the 1720s and 1740s. During this period, Czech products were unrivalled on the luxury glass market. In addition to glasses, chandeliers and mirrors were particularly popular.
